Pärekori / Shingle basket. Very, very traditional type of a basket. I got one from my mother-in-law and I use it to store unfinished knitworks so they look prettier in the living room:) Other purpose is to collect herbs etc., so they get enough air before the final handling.

The tradition of the visually impared people preparing handicrafts dates back to the 17th century, when the selling of brooms and baskets begun. At 1919 the first store to sell the handicrafts of the blind people was established to Helsinki - and the store is still there! These days it can be difficult to get the material (we're in Finland so not the wood, but ready-made shingles;) and usually only very old people have the knowledge on how to prepare these. But if necessary it is also possible to learn the technique at local folk high schools.
