The Finnish pavilion at the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris.  It was designed by the great Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen.  The painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela  made the frescoes in the entrance hall (destroyed at the end of exposure and partly repainted in the 1920s in the lobby of the National Museum in Helsinki). Finland’s resistance to Russification took many forms. It can even be seen in postal history.  This postcard depicts a Finnish woman with a lion on her breast and Lex, the Finnish law at her side. It also illustrates with subtle symbolism the rising sun, a clear reference to Japan, who defeated the Russians in the Japanese/Russian war in 1904-05.

In the Winter War Finland stood alone; other countries offered only sympathy and modest assistance. Finnish ski troops inflicted heavy casualties on the Russian army. Finland's survival against overwhelming Russian forces became legendary all over the world.
