Akseli Gallen-Kallela, 'Lemminkäisen äiti' / 'Mother of Lemminkäinen'…

The Defense of the Sampo (Sammon puolustus) is a 1896 Romantic nationalist painting by Finnish painter Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The painting illustrates a passage from the Kalevala, the Finnish national epic compiled by Elias Lönnrot in the century.

One of my favourite artists is Akseli Gallen-Kallela. He was a Finnish romantic period artist who used the recently published Kalevala as his inspiration.

The Kalevala is the national saga of Finland. Pieced together (and embellished) by Elias Lönnrot in the late Century, from a traditional cycle told by rural storytellers, the tales which constitute the Kalevala show signs of great antiquity
