The crossbow, or arbalest, was the leading hand-held missile-projecting weapon of the early Middle Ages. Consisting of a steel bow mounted horizontally across a wooden stock, its ammunition was a short steel bolt, or “quarrel”. It was far more maneuverable than an ordinary bow, since it could be fired easily from behind a parapet, or lying on the ground. Its main disadvantage was that its range was limited to about 300 meters, a distance exceeded by the longbow.
A fairly basic battering ram from the early middle ages. It would be wheeled up to a fortified gate where inertial momentum would be applied to swing the ram against the gate and hopefully bash it down or make a breach in it. Since the ram was vulnerable while sitting directly below the battlements it was often covered with soaking wet animal hides to help prevent it from being set alight from above.
