SAILOR WHIRLYGIG - Whirlygigs were common yard and fence decor on old Cape Cod. When I was young, my Great Aunt's cottage greeted us with a whirlygig shaped like a windmill. Its familiar, soft clickity-clack as it spun in the ocean breeze outside my bedroom window would lull me to sleep for my afternoon naps. I'd love to see a return to the simple and beautiful works of folk art in yards all across the Cape and Islands. They are part of what made the area so special.
