A photo of a brave Civil War vet & free man. Lewis was in an unmarked grave for 121 yrs. A community effort was made to give him a headstone in 2013. Born in AR, he escaped, & moved to IL where he joined a black regiment. A few months later, he lost his right arm and left leg in battle. After, he couldn't work because he didn't read or write & was unable to do manual labor. He lived his life in pain due to his injuries, & used alcohol to dull it. Lewis will always be remembered on AncientFaces. American Legion Post, Co E, James River, American Legions, Two Brothers, Headstones, Regiment, Petersburg, Dull

Sometimes the person in a photo is a complete mystery - even the location, the time, and the gender are unknown. But this photo of a baby in a buggy is just too wonderful to keep to ourselves!

Is this a "he" or a "she"? What year is it? Where was it taken? Even though we don't know anything about this photo, perhaps through working together one day this child's name will be remembered on AncientFaces. Rescued from an antique store, this resulted in an interesting discovery. Written on the back was "Grandma, wife of Col. Jack C. Johnson (age about 40) and mama, Mary 'Mamie' E. Johnson-Robb (about 6 months old) born April 8, 1876 in Placerville in Bruster House. . .

The owner of the photo found out a lot about the mom & baby, including that they were California pioneers and that the (unseen) father of the baby named both Lake Tahoe and nearby Fallen Leaf Lake. Nothing is known about this "lost & found" photo, yet every time I see it I'm intrigued...

Member Charles S. shared this photo about 10 years ago, and if he hadn't shared it, this bit of American history would have been lost. Does anyone have any ideas about the photo? Have you seen others like it?

Charles thinks that this is a group of Catholic School children because of the nuns and the lady in the hat. There's something about nuns in a cart pulled by a cow that has always stuck in my mind. Catholic School, Lost & Found, Nuns, Kids School, American History, Cow

I get hot just looking at this!

Taken in 1939, this camp cook was responsible for feeding the cowboys on a cattle ranch in Spur Texas. He was quoted as saying "the boys treat me awfully good". As well they should - he must have been very hot and tired by the end of the day.

In the 1960s my grandmother worked at Seward General Hospital in Alaska. This photo of Harry Johnson, age 86, cutting firewood in a Seward snowstorm was found in her album after she died. Harry was a friend of grandma's and it's a treasure for my family to see a slice of her life from her time in Seward. Hopefully the relatives of Harry Johnson will discover this photo they likely don't know exists.
