Do these 3 things:

Write for an ideal reader

Help them in some way with your content

Explain how you do it

If you're struggling, use this simple framework.

𝙄 𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙓 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝 𝙔 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝 𝙕.

X = your audience.

Y = what you do for them.

Z = how you do it.

For example:

"𝘐 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭, 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺-𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵."

Or

"𝘐 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘯 𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘮𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘳𝘶𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘤𝘩."

You don't need to put that statement on your social profiles...

It's a framework for organizing your ideas and figuring out what to write about.
Gain insight into your audience’s online habits to optimize your reach effectively. Identify where your readers frequent and direct your efforts strategically. Understanding their preferences can elevate the impact of your content significantly. By tailoring your approach to match their digital stomping grounds, you can boost engagement and foster deeper connections with your audience. Explore new opportunities to engage with them authentically by pinpointing their preferred online platforms and tailor-fitting your content for maximum resonance.
I've earned multiple six figures from writing online and worked harder and longer than I'd like to admit.

Here are 5 things I've learnt:

1. Selling books on Amazon KDP - These days it's more profitable to sell books directly to your audience.

2. Building content websites with SEO - The content website model was insanely profitable pre-ChatGPT. SEO is much harder today for content creators.

3. Writing on LinkedIn - It's an excellent way of connecting with like-minded readers, peers and clients.

4. Chasing likes, shares, and traffic - Finding clients and customers is far more satisfying AND profitable.

5. Writing daily newsletters - I didn't treat email as the best way of connecting with readers until last year. Now, I write and send daily emails.

Writing online doesn't have to be hard
Separate writing, editing, and publishing. Do these at different times of the day or week, and you'll accomplish far more in less time. Don't rely on an algo, build an email list. An engaged email list is far more profitable than impressions, likes, and shares. Marry intuition with analytics. Rather than relying on gut feel... Use data to decide what types of content to create and publish. Write to one ideal reader. In your content, explain what you learnt and your biggest mistakes.

One of my favorite ads?
Ikea's 2002 rug-pull from American filmmaker Spike Jonze. The ad showed a woman dumping an old, red lamp in the rain She replaces the lamp with a newer one from Ikea. Jonas Fornander pops up and says, "Many of you feel bad for this lamp. That's because you're crazy. It has no feelings and the new one is much better." In 2018, Ikea released a sequel. The red melancholy lamp finds a new home with a loving family. Fornander reappears to say: "Many of you feel happy for this lamp. That's not crazy. Reusing things is better." He's right. It's much easier to take an old hit and rework it than it is to create something new. Pro writers do this all the time.
a tweet that reads,'do one thing every day that helps you land your next writing gig '
I spent a decade working as a freelance writer
I tried it all. Covering local news. Reviewing products and gadgets. Writing scripts for radio. Sub-editing in a newspaper. Feature writing for magazines. Copywriting for small businesses (this pays well). Freelance writing isn’t always easy. On more than one occasion,… I got a big freelance writing gig and worked on it for a month. Then, I found myself out of work because I had nothing else lined up. I’d lived off my credit card until more work turned up. If you’re getting into freelance writing, here’s my number one tip: Do one thing every day that helps you land your NEXT writing gig.
