"The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle," (5.V.22) This line is Macbeth's response to Lady Macbeth committing suicide. Similar to an earlier quotation of Macbeth's "black and deep desires", light is used to represent life, while darkness is death. The flame of the candle emits light, and therefor life, but once blown out only leaves the remnants of life, the smoke, and fills the room with darkness.
