I love this idea because there are two of the same people in the photo and you are a part of the other persons photo.

Similar to an earlier quotation of Macbeth's "black and deep desires", light is used to represent life, while darkness is death. The flame of the candle emits light, and therefor life, but once blown out only leaves the remnants of life, the smoke, and fills the room with darkness.
