Along with the katana sword that every Samurai warrior carried into battle they also most likely carried a smaller weapon like one of these knives. These knives were small and compact which allowed the Samurai warrior to carry them almost anywhere on there person without being detected. You can see they would carve unique designs into the knives that all had different messages.
