Various artwork of the mid-19th century period
The portrait Sallie Ward hangs in the J.B. Speed Art Museum in Louisville Ky. It was painted in 1860 by George Peter Alexander Healy, an established portrait painter whose works included Abraham Lincoln, John Tyler, and Ulysses Grant. Sallie sat for the portrait the year prior to the Civil War. She was living in New Orleans with her second husband, having divorced her first. She returned to Kentucky at the outbreak of the war and was a Northern advocate. Her husband did not survive the war.
