This Shetland crofter is making a kishie, a type of basket made out of straw or rushes. These had many uses including carrying peat or potatoes, sowing seeds and oats, and transporting goods to and from market. The photograph was taken in the 1890s.

Mary, Queen of Scots (bn. 1542) and her first husband Francis II of France. Mary was the only child of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. She was raised in the French court of Henry II and Catherine de' Medici. The young newly married couple became King and Queen of France in 1559 not even a year after their marriage. Francis died less than a year after that leaving Mary a widow and she returned to Scotland to rule and cause trouble for her lords and her cousin Queen Elizabeth I.
