The original gilded decoration of the dome was lost as a result of damp penetration in the 1940s. It was regilded in 2010 as part of the major refurbishment. Most of the tiles in the Arab Hall were produced in Damascus in the late 16th century and acquired by Lord Leighton during a series of visits to the Middle East. During a visit to Damascus in 1873 Leighton was helped by the Reverend William Wright, a missionary an amateur archaeologist who spoke Arabic And knew the city well.
