SANTA CLARA ISLAND. Few cities are fortunate enough to have an island in the middle of their bay; San Sebastian is one of these lucky ones. You can enjoy its small beach; take a stroll from the landing stage to the unusual lighthouse building; walk along footpaths with their open-air cafés... Its closeness to the beaches that line the Bay mean that it's also possible to swim out to the island all year round.

PARKS & GARDENS. CRISTINA ENEA. The exotic trees, the romantic swans and peacocks, the architecture of the building in the centre of the park – all of these remind us that this park was an oasis of peace, a gift the Duke of Mandas gave to his wife. The park was designed by Pierre Ducasse, who also designed the gardens of Miramar Palace and Gipuzkoa Square.
MOUNT URGULL 12th-century LA MOTA CASTLE, high up on the mountain, was a key element in the town's defence, and around it we can still see cannons and defensive loopholes. PARKS & GARDENS. AIETE PARK. Noble and majestic. That's Aiete Park. Situated on one of the hills that surround the city, it's notable for its impressive gardens and, of course, its palace. Its walls witnessed the comings and goings of aristocratic personalities such as Isabel II, Queen Victoria of England, Queen María Cristina, Alfonso XIII who chose the palace as their summer residence. Today, however, it's about to be converted into a cultural centre brimming with creative activity.
SAN SEBASTIAN'S MOUNTAINS. MOUNT URGULL. The city's stormy military history is still alive on Mount Urgull. In the 12th century Mount Urgull's situation and orography (mountainous relief) turned it into a military fort. The city walls were attacked and besieged over the years, and the only surviving remains of them are those existing on Mount Urgull, and those preserved in the car park underneath the Boulevard.
