Everything I make is a little part of me, and so I tend to think of I’m writing out the instructions based on how I knit mine up, and 54 stitches was a good size for my somewhat larger head. Altering the number of stitches will change the pattern, so if you want a smaller/bigger hat, go down/up a needle size after considering your gauge.
