the crew of Apollo 1 was killed when fire engulfed their spacecraft during a ground test. The disaster stalled America's race to the moon for a year and a half .

Apollo 1 mission patch - Jan. 27, 1967, tragedy struck on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204 (AS-204).  Was to be the first crewed flight of Apollo and was scheduled to launch Feb. 21, 1967.  Astronauts Grissom, White, and Chaffee lost their lives when a fire swept through the command module.

Apollo 1: Astronauts Virgil "Gus" I. Grissom, Edward H. White II, and Roger B. Chaffee were to pilot the first manned Apollo mission. Tragically, during launch pad testing, a fire would asphyxiate the team. The mission was originally designated the Apollo 204, but was renamed Apollo 1 in their recognition.
