Uranium: the Metal of Tomorrow

Nuclear power is a clean energy source that will be used well into the future to help meet the world’s growing energy requirements. In this infographic, Visual Capitalist highlights uranium’s history, properties and fundamentals moving forward.

What Is a Nuclear Meltdown?

A nuclear meltdown is an informal term for a severe nuclear reactor accident that results in core damage from overheating. The term is not officially defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency or by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

In order to turn nuclear fission into electrical energy, nuclear power plant operators have to control the energy given off by the enriched uranium and allow it to heat water into steam. Enriched uranium typically is formed into inch-long (2.5-centimeter-long) pellets, each with approximately the same diameter as a dime. Next, the pellets are arranged into long rods, and the rods are collected together into bundles. The bundles are submerged in water inside a pressure vessel.

It could provide clean, cheap, inexhaustible power to the world. So why haven't we figured it out yet?

Although expensive to build and maintain the infrastructure required to implement, the energy output of nuclear fusion is enough to support entire cities in a sustainable fashion with minimal energy input.

This rare photo was snapped by Reuters photographer Ruben Sprich during a yearly inspection of the Muehleberg nuclear power station in Switzerland. The cosmic blue glow is a result of Cherenkov radiation, an electromagnetic radiation seen in reactors.

Caesar is like a nuclear power plant because he is a small source of energy, but with boundless amounts of power. He is also very unstable like the core of a nuclear plant.
