The verb "to miss" can be tricky to express in German as there are at least three verbs that can be used for different circumstances. Here are some of the most common uses. Sometimes, it can get even more involved (e.g. both "einen Rekord verfehlen" and "einen Rekord verpassen" are possible, but "verpassen" is mostly used with a TIMED event). "verpassen" and "verfehlen" are sometimes interchangeable with nuances. The visual simply provides some--hopefully helpful--guidelines.
