The Åland Islands    Åland is a demilitarised, Swedish-speaking autonomous region of Finland. Here are some interesting tidbits about Åland:    Åland has its own parliament (Ålands lagting) and government (Ålands landskapsregering)  Mariehamn – the one and only town –  is the the ‘capital’ of Åland. Vårdö kyrka (eller stenkapellet Sundsskären) på Vårdö på Åland är en stenkyrka från slutet av 1400-talet tillägnad aposteln Mattias.[1]  Kyrkan var ursprungingen ett kapell under Sunds kyrka. 1866 blev kyrkan moderkyrka i Vårdö församling för att sedan på 1970 åter ingå i den sammanslagna Sund-Vårdö församling
