Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (Italian 1573-1610) Oil on canvas, National Gallery of Ancient Art, Rome Italy Caravaggio pushed his figures up against the picture plane and used dramatic lighting which gives his paintings a quality of immediacy. He portrayed realistic observations of the physical and emotional human state. These combined characteristics had a formative influence on Baroque painting.

by Fausto Zonaro. Fausto Zonaro (18 September 1854 – 19 July 1929) was an Italian painter and the court painter (Ottoman Turkish: Ressam-ı Hazret-i Şehriyari) of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II. He was a prolific artist who created hundreds of works, most of which are of the Ottoman Empire.

The story is told in two of the Gospels (Matthew 14: 3-12 and Mark 6: 17-29): St John the Baptist is in prison for denouncing the adulterous and incestuous liaison between King Herod and Herodias. Salome (Herodiass daughter by a previous marriage) so delights the King with her dancing that he promises to give her anything she wants.
