Frost flowers

Ice can be damaging or deadly, but it can also inadvertently create some of the most beautiful and fascinating winter wonderland sights. The formation of ice is subject to a million different variables, and the tiniest change in humidity, temperature, or wind speed can create an assortment of natural phenomena.

Have you ever spotted one of these unique winter flowers?

The first hard freeze of the fall and I have a few "frost flowers" on the dead stems of my appropriately-named Frostweed, Verbesina virginica (also called White Crownbeard). I really need to spend some time working on the lighting with these. I cut this one out and put it in a jar in the freezer--perhaps I can get more detail shots later. I'll also crop the other stems to see if I get a good number of these tomorrow--the frost flowers form best on stems that have been cut fairly short…
