Unpacked from the gas kiln this morning, an old bowl, but one that’s now been salvaged. It was thrown and fired more than a year ago and since then it has lived gathering dust on the shelves in the studio. It’s slightly oval, which I don’t mind, but it makes selling it in my online shop more difficult, so for this last firing I coated it in black iron oxide, inside and out, and almost to the foot. More glaze closeups, all reduction fired, all variants of my usual crackle glaze but with different colourants, such as cobalt oxide, manganese dioxide and varying quantities of red iron oxide and even titanium dioxide. The bright blue is coloured by three percent cobalt oxide. It’s vivid. Too vivid for me, so in my next round of tests I’ll be scaling it back and incorporating other materials to try and find something that’s more neutral, like slate.
