Usage of the Citadel hill dates back at least to the middle of the 3rd millennium BC. The bridge and inner and outer entrance towers date from the 13th century. Anyone trying to invade the citadel would have to take over six turns up a vaulted entrance ramp, over which were machicolations for pouring hot liquids on attackers from the mezzanine above. The Citadel was damaged during the Civil War but wasn't as badly damaged as the rest of the Old City. Picture taken in 2004.
