Before the Automobile: 1880's corset and a chemise with ball gown neckline

My previous 1880's corset has been too tight around bust and hips from the beginning, but I've always liked it, so I kept using it by lacing it unevenly. Now I was ready to try to make a better fitting corset. The shape didn't come out quite as I envisioned, but at least it can be laced evenly now. One day I'm going to try to make a corset with same fit but rounder curves. It's made from black cotton coutil and iridescent duchess silk satin treated as one layer, stitched with light blue silk…

This is a circa 1890's corset. It appears to never have been worn. Made of a single layer of cotton, with whalebone boning except for the busk, underbusk, steels along the center back, and one at each side. So it is indeed very light. And this corset is tiny. The waist is only 20 inches laced closed. Tiny

It is light as a feather, but the ancient fabric seems more crisp and fragile rather than stiff. I'm still dealing with hand issues (Why won't the swelling go down? Or rather, why does it go down, but reappear as soon as I use my hand?) so I thought I'd share this corset I have. So pretty. This is a circa 1890's corset. It appears to never have been worn. Before the Automobile: corded 1870's corset

I drafted the chemise pattern after looking a lot of museum examples online. I tried to make it in a style that would fit both 1860's and 1870's. It's made of thin cotton and the trimmed with cotton lace. The drawers are also drafted by me, trimmed with the same lace and pintucks. The is a one layer cotton coutil corset, sewn with machine using period techniques described in The Fashions Of The Gilded Age by Frances Grimble. The pattern is based on the c. 1873 corset from Corsets and…

This is my newest creation and the first finished corset of the upcoming collection. Its made of a light-golden duchesse, decorated with two types of lace (a very filigree golden one and black sequined hand-cut lace ornaments) and darker-golden bindings. More details: Black busk, black eyelets…

The victorian corset gave women that highley desired hour glass figure. It wasn't too much the women didn't look like the figure of sexiness but gave an image of demour famanity. Out of all the things I like about this period it has to be the corset.
