The Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin was built between 1342 and 1356 as part of a new bridge over the River Calder. Originally one of four chantry chapels in Wakefield. It is now one of only four bridge chapels that survive in the country - along with Bradford-on-Avon, Rotherham and St Ives.
