Athens was founded more than 3500 years ago. The city was at the height of its powers during the fifth century B.C. when its most famous temple, the Parthenon, was constructed. The city state had a large cultural and political influence on the rest of Europe; it is even considered the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of modern civilisation. After long periods of occupation Athens regained importance in the 19th century when it became the capital of Greece.
