Jane arrives at Thonfield in Chapter 11 and finds the interior "cosy and agreeable." Se meets Mrs. Fairfax who it turns out was not the owner of the house as Jane had thought. Jane learns that she will be tutoring Adele, an 8 year old French girl who was left in the care of Rochester. Jane hears eerie laughter throughout the house and Fairfax summons a girl named Grace and orders her to make less noise.
