Mariss Jansons (1943) studied violin, piano, and conducting starting with the Leningrad Philharmonic in 1973 as associate conductor. In 1979 he came to attention as music director of Oslo's Philharmonic: a major orchestra. In 1985 he was asked as principal conductor of the Leningrad Philharmonic and led it in Europe, America, and Japan, and led the Oslo Philharmonic to more music centers. He guest conducted many major orchestras. He is a strong conductor of symphonic classics of many composers.

Simon Rattle (1955) became chief conductor in 2002 following his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker 15 years earlier. He took over an inheritance with a balance of tradition and innovation and is a renowned conductor of Mahler and the composers of the 2nd Viennese School like Abbado, continuing the repertoire of the post-war era performaning works of the Classical period. With the Easter Festival in Salzburg, he has upheld the music tradition of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
