Wardell Gray, The Tiffany Club, Los Angeles, 1950. Wardell's big break came in 1943 when he joined the Earl Hines Orchestra, which had nurtured the careers of Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. His playing matured rapidly during this time, and he soon became the featured soloist. He left Hines in 1946 and started recording under his own name.
