Las Canadas Caldera, Tenerife, Canary Islands, at the summit of Mount Teide. It is the third highest island volcano in the world. The crater is sixteen kilometres across. Sheer walls that formed when the caldera first collapsed encircle this dry and alien place. A sleeping yet still active volcano. Source:SantaBanta.com

THE HUGE CRATER OF MOUNT TEIDE Las Cañadas caldera, Mount Teide – Not dead just sleeping! The UN Committee for Disaster Mitigation has listed Teide for close observation due to its history of powerful eruptions and its location near several large towns.

On 2/19/2013 glowing fountains of lava erupted from Mount Etna's southeast crater. Four separate outbursts were recorded within about a 48-hour period. Even though eruptions of Etna (about 10,900 ft) occur quite frequently, it hasn't exploded with successive episodes such as this since at least 2000.
