The Baltic Sea is one of the busiest sea routes in the world. Every moment approx. 2000 large-sized ships travel across the sea, from oil tankers to passenger ferries. The ship traffic is expected to double in the coming years.
On the surface, the state of the Baltic Sea has improved slightly. However, nutrients have accumulated on the sea floor, creating oxygen-depleted areas that continue to release loads of nutrients. The cycle can be broken if the eco-system of the sea is restored.
