All licensed Clinical Nutritionists in Finland come from Kuopio. University of Eastern Finland has the highest enrollment (degree towards M.D.) in the country for its Faculty of Medicine. Likewise the University Hospital of Kuopio is the largest teaching hospital in Finland.

Kuopio saves half a million euros per year due to bicycle commuting, according to a recent study. In 2013, Kuopio participated in a survey on bicycle commuting organised by the WHO with two other European cities. The case was featured on Eltis - Europe's main portal on urban mobility.
