Kuopio saves half a million euros per year due to bicycle commuting, according to a recent study. In 2013, Kuopio participated in a survey on bicycle commuting organised by the WHO with two other European cities. The case was featured on Eltis - Europe's main portal on urban mobility.
Kuopio has the least cars per population after the capital Helsinki. Kuopio also has the highest population density in its urban areas after Helsinki. The so-called Kuopio model of zoning and supplemental building, or "finger model", makes suburbs instantly viable to connect with bus routes between the finger and the city center.
