Fitting Tutorial: Removing Neck Gape

One of the problems I face with many patterns is neck gape on commercial patterns. It can be on the front, on the back, or even both. Some people might ask, "Well did you choose your pattern by your high bust measurement?" Yes, I did. My high bust measurement is about 34" which is a size 12 Big 4 pattern (McCall's, Butterick, Simplicity, and Vogue). My front width measurement also corresponds to a size 12 as per Nancy Ziemen's recommendation for pattern size in her book Fitting Finesse. So…

One of the things i love about pattern drafting is the math of it. Start by Drafting a Basic Bodice Block

Get started with some basic pattern cutting by creating a basic bodice block. From this you can create endless upper body garments. If you are creating this block for yourself or a model, then make it in paper first, add seam allowances (1/4",1cm is usual) Tip: if you don't have pattern cutting paper, old rolls of wrapping paper or brown paper are fine. Use a pencil with hard lead 1H or 2H Cut the bodice out in basic woven fabric and stitch up, leaving some simple opening so that it can be…

Cozy Bed Jacket and Silk Panties Patterns

Here are a couple of patterns for the lady of the house. A cozy bed jacket and a pair of silk panties. The bed jacket can be made without cutting a paper pattern but it might be easier for the less experienced seamstress to make a paper pattern first. One suggestion for this bed jacket was wool challis but I think a lightweight polar fleece would work too and would be so soft and cuddly on a cold winter morning. You can trim the edges with a buttonhole stitch as indicated below but trimming…

New skirt - with no-zip trick!

This is another garment which had to wait till the weekend to get a photoshoot (now with more bookshelves! And granny's sewing machine and some of my vintage magazines. That's what the thick book in my hands is: half a year of Libelle from 1956) The pictures E takes just always end up looking a lot nicer than the self timer ones. It's a very simple skirt which I've wanted to make for a while. Fairly full and long and made from a denim-like fabric (coarse cotton thread in off-white and indigo…

Patternbook - recent find #2

I recently found this old textbook that I've been searching for for years. It's a book on Pattern Drafting & Grading from Fashion Design School. It's from 1977, but the designs are decades older as you can tell. I was sad thinking it was gone forever especially since I couldn't remember it's title. I'm glad to have it back, there are a few tops in it I really love.
