The women in this icon are known collectively as the Holy Myrrhbearers. They are the ones who stayed close by to Christ to the very end and to first to see him after His glorious Resurrection. Notice Mary Magdalene in the middle.
The very first day of every year, January the Church appropriately honors the Blessed Virgin Mary with a Marian feast day. And the title by which she is honored on this day is also the first Marian dogma defined by the Church: The Mother of God.
