Dimicator - On the right you see the shield of the Lords of Welfenberg, c. 1300 (Marburger Universitätsmuseum für Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte). The shield is flat and must have always been so, or else the decoration on its front would show according damage from flattening. Height is 62 cm, maximum width 47 cm, top edge is 41 cm. This is the oldest Marburg example of a shape that is depicted in the "Grosse Heidelberger Liederhandschrift" Cod. Pal. germ. 848), more commonly known as Codex Manesse (1305 – 1340). See, for example, folio 149v, showing Wolfram von Eschenbach. | Facebook

Dimicator - A further medieval shield on display in Marburg. With this one you can see very well how the original shape has been distorted due to careless storage in previous centuries.
