The interior fittings were fashioned from local spruce, and the wood-burning stove was built by the Mr. Lassila himself—'brick by brick,' he says. The sauna cost around $20,300.The contrast between the new and old wood is echoed in his new house, which uses clashing materials like aluminum, wood and concrete.

This is the interior of the Lake Pielinen sauna. Built out of aspen logs, the sauna stove takes about six hours to heat up, and then stays warm for up to 18 hours. The stove, made of handcrafted soapstone, weighs well over three tons, and includes customized metalwork. The sauna cost about $33,700.
