His prize package soap sell racket earned his nickname. When the Klondike Gold Rush began in 1897, Soapy opened a fake telegraph office, wires went only as far as the wall. Not only did the telegraph office obtain fees for "sending" messages, but soon found themselves losing money to new "friends" Juneau, Confidence Man, Creede, Shell Game, Magic Castle
