Louis XV 1745 | Only in his final years did Louis XV make an effort to take full control of his own government.
Louis XV (1710 -1774) ruled as King of France from 1715 until his death. He brought France further towards bankruptcy through lavish spending and several wars with England, Austria, the Ottoman Empire, and Prussia. Considered to be the “First Gentleman of Europe”, he was a man of great charm and easy morals. His many mistresses were famous.

Nikon D300-iso400-f4-1/60-12mm-pop up flash & some heavy handed raw processing. Named after the 5th Duchess, this was a ladies’ withdrawing room, leaving the gentlemen in the dining room to relax over their port and cigars. It is in the French rococo style, with Louis XIV gold plated furniture, marble statues, silk damask wall panels and a ceiling decorated with several painted scenes. The carpet is from Tournai and cost £165 back in 1780.
