Bernini, The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, 1745-52. This is the sculpture that sets the standard for all the rest. Bernini had the ability to make marble take on a fleshy, life-like quality which no one had thought possible. Within this work the deep creases and hyperbolic folds of the carmelite nuns habit show how Bernini had the ability to manipulate marble in whatever way he wanted.
