Emese's Dream, the legend of the conception of Prince Álmos, is one of the earliest known tales from Hungarian history ( dated 820-997). Emese was impregnated by a turul bird, who appeared to her in a dream & told her that from her womb a great river would begin & flow out over strange lands. Dream interpreters said this meant that she would give birth to a son who would lead his people, & that her descendants would be glorious kings. Álmos' name comes from the Hungarian word álom (dream).

Finland’s resistance to Russification took many forms. It can even be seen in postal history. This postcard depicts a Finnish woman with a lion on her breast and Lex, the Finnish law at her side. It also illustrates with subtle symbolism the rising sun, a clear reference to Japan, who defeated the Russians in the Japanese/Russian war in 1904-05.

The Maiden of Finland - Suomi-neito - is the national personification of Finland. She has been usually pictured as a young beautiful woman with blonde hair and blue eyes - wearing some form of Finnish national dress or a blue and white dress - or sometimes a dress with red and yellow heraldic colors which are present in the coat of arms of Finland.

The Finnish Maiden is older than the Finnish nation. She was devised to represent the longed-for national independence in the 19th century, when Finland was still a Grand Duchy in the Russian Empire.
