From the north of Sweden, a Sami folk costume. The young mother is wearing a kirtle from Arjeplog made of elk chamois leather. The kirtle is a modern version with a zig zag design round the neckline and the wrists. She is also wearing the traditional cap and a woven belt, and carrying a leather cradle, a “gietgam” (in South Lule Sami language).
Sámi girl, Norway. The Sami people, also spelled Sámi or Saami, are the Arctic indigenous people inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses parts of far northern Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Kola Peninsula of Russia, and the border area between south and middle Sweden and Norway. The Sámi are Europe's northernmost and the Nordic countries' only officially indigenous people.
