Thanks to brain specialist Fritz Mengert, I learned how to use a red dot in my reading instruction. Mengert told me that placing a red dot in the center of a word helps kids focus on the middle rather than just the beginning.

Let students record themselves reading a passage. They can reread as many times as you want them to in order to gain greater fluency. Students improve when they can hear their own reading, and evaluate it.
