Father Ferdinand Verbiest (9 October 1623 – 28 January 1688) was a Flemish Jesuit missionary in China during the Qing dynasty, like Matteo Ricci (1552-1610 AD) and Adam Schall (1592-1666 AD) before him, bringing the science of the West to the East.  After winning an astronomy contest, Ferdinand Verbiest was awarded complete charge of the astronomy observatory by the emperor. In 1673, he supervised the rebuilding of some of the instruments.
