Aircraft carriers were once a common sight along the waterways beneath Golden Gate Bridge. For more than a century, the Bay Area was ringed by a handful of large Navy bases and shipyards that together served to shelter and repair a significant chunk of America’s Pacific Fleet. The last of those bases closed during the 1990s, however, and with them the Navy’s presence in the region all but disappeared.
