Reynolds, J.N. MOCHA DICK: OR THE WHITE WHALE OF THE PACIFIC. NY. 1932. Duotone woodcuts. 4to. 90, (1) pp. Reynolds wrote the first published account of the legend of the “White Whale” on which Melville based his famous novel “Moby-Dick.” I’ve seen mid-19th century appearances of Reynolds’ yarn in newspapers, but the first book apperance wasn’t until the 1870s. This edition was published by Scribners, with handsome wood engraved whaling scenes by Lowell LeRoy Balcom.

Shapiro, Harry L. DESCENDANTS OF THE MUTINEERS OF THE BOUNTY, MEMOIRS OF THE BERNICE P. BISHOP MUSEUM, VOLUME XI, NUMBER 1. Honolulu. 1929. In the 1850s the residents of Pitcairn Island -- descendants of the Bounty mutineers and Tahitians -- were transferred to Norfolk Island where, in 1923-4, this study was conducted. Shapiro gives a tidy history of the Bounty affair and a more detailed account of the lives and culture of the Pitcairn Islanders prior to 1850.
