Murderous Mary- On September 12, 1916 the Sparks World Famous Shows was in Kingsport, TN. A hotel worker named Red Eldridge was hired to help with a 5 ton Asian elephant, Mary. While walking her, he prodded her behind the ear. She became enraged, threw him to the ground and stepped on his head. No one had a gun big enough to kill her so the next day she was taken by train to Erwin, Tn. and hanged with a crane at the train depot. The crowd was chanting, "Kill the elephant!"
