Carlos Norman Hathcock II was a United States Marine Corps (USMC) sniper with a service record of 93 confirmed kills, hence the book. His fame as a sniper and his dedication to long-distance shooting led him to become a major developer of the USMC Sniper training program not just in the States but in Vietnam as well. Hathcock is the only known sniper to use a Browning M2 .50 caliber machine gun as a sniping platform. He held the record for longest confirmed kill at 2286m until 2002.
