"Geisha Girls." Taken by the Gerhard Sisters during the 1904 World's Fair. Emme and Mamie Gerhard photographed people living and performing on the Pike and in the Anthropology Department exhibits at the World's Fair. Taken in their St. Louis studio using natural light to accentuate the facial characteristics, these captivating images brought a level of humanness to subjects that were often, in the context of the Fair displays, seen only as exotic or even dangerous.
