Belmead is owned by the Roman Catholic Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. The site was once home to St. Emma Military Academy, an all-black, all-male Catholic military school opened 1895 and closed 1972. It was reopened in 1987 as a Catholic high school, Blessed Sacrament that operates there today.
