This is where my paternal grandparents met. He was stationed at Fort Sheridan with the Cavalry and somehow they met when the soldiers paraded, then fell in love and married in January 1934. The rest is my family history!

In the early war, the German Kriegsmarine was split between surface raiders and U-boats. The Admiral Graf Spee was a Deutschland-class "pocket" Battleship that roamed the Atlantic in the first months of the war, sinking 9 merchants and avoiding British and French hunter groups. In December 1939, she was caught and engaged by HMS Exeter, Ajax, and Achilles. Having taken 70 hits and 90 casualties, the ship withdrew into harbour at Montevideo, Uruguay for repairs.
