"Fist to five" check students rate their understanding by holding up the appropriate number of fingers. The goal is for everyone to be in the green. Great way for students to self-assess their understanding and help you to gauge student understanding.

Before you speak: THINK: T= Is it true, H= is it helpful, I= is it inspiring, N= is it necessary, K= is it kind

Lots of people today need to really THINK before they speak. Too many people have forgotten how to be kind and speak with respect. The saddest part for me is that children are watching and learning how to imitate the same behavior.

This would make a great procedure (Harry Wong). Count to five or hold up one finger at a time when the class needs to refocus. Discuss what occurs for each number at the beginning of the school year and eventually the reaction will be automatic.

So fun that voice level 1 is 'spy talk!' My kids could really get into that!

This voice levels poster is used in most preschools during my placesment, I think it is an effective way for teachers to control the voices in the kinder. Child also remember the colors and related voice levels that they should use inside and outside.

Collaborating with students to establish classroom rules is very important to me. My students and I will work together to establish rules for the year and post them where we can see them.

This checklist is a good tool for formative assessment that allows for more confidentiality in your classroom. Rather than a grade given you can use this as a progress chart to see where each student stands after a lesson or whatever it may be. This is a good tool because you can date each one and see the improvement of each student over a period of time, or you could compare their understanding to other subjects across the board, like the one pictured did.

Idea for Brownie Dance Badge: For a "surprise" movement/dance when you need something to fill time. Would be easy to put in a can and have a student pick one out. Use rhythm patterns for student to clap, or sing intervals, or name tempo markings, etc.

Spell out routine from day one

Smiling in Second Grade: Gooood Morning! I love her entire morning routine. Even in middle school life skills, most of the ideas are quite adaptable.
